Do you recognise this scenario? Any similarity to living people is purely coincidence (probably). :-)

"Above all, don't lie to yourself.  The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. "

Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

1)  Join a political party and through what ever means are at you disposal (whether legitimate or not), rise to become its leader.

2)  Exploit a crisis, whether it is real or invented.  Blame it on a relatively powerless group in society, then use the anti-minority feeling that you have created to to work up a mass movement against whoever you have chosen as your scapegoats.  A bit of rabble rousing should get you elected (this seems to have worked in numerous countries throughout the world.  So far as I can see, the end result has never been good).

3)  Stage a coup claiming to have all the answers to the supposed problems you have highlighted.  Even if your coup fails, this should not be seen as a problem, you can always blame it on your chosen minority and on the liberal 'failings' of the current regime trying to hang onto power. If you end up in court, then this too is merely the fault of the current regime/ minority, and is a great means of gaining publicity so keep going, and keep stirring.  Even if you end up in gaol, this too is not your fault, but merely proof of the current regime trying to persecute and silence you.

4)  Once re-elected, immediately claim special powers, and bombard the establishment with loads of new laws.  Many of these new laws may be mundane, but the sheer volume will camouflage the ones that are important to you, these being to centralise power, and disenfranchise non supporters.  More extreme methods than mere legislation are also possible, since special emergency powers will also give you direct control of the army and police.  These, through suitable tailoring can be moulded to your cause.  Remember, chaos is your friend, as is censorship of opposing ideologies.

5)  As with all politicians, you can praise leading citizens/ other politicians who die, just so long as their views were not diametrically opposed to yours.  A little pomp and ceremony makes a nice spectacle and makes for nice publicity.  You are now a dictator, you can afford to seem generous.

OK, the above writeup is somewhat generalised, but it covers many of the main points in Hitler's rise to power.  I'm not so sure that the same sort of game plan isn't being used again today!

2026 may well be interesting, but also quite dangerous for western type democracies.  Keep your fingers crossed for a good outcome.  And on that cheery note........

 HAPPY NEW YEAR
